In December of 1997, Mark Raulin posted the following notice to the LOWER-DELMARVA-ROOTS-L online mailing list:

I have volunteered to compile a listing of surnames and e-mail addresses for persons researching Eastern Shore families. This list will be published in the Dorchester County Genealogical Society newsletter in March 1998 and will be made available to those with access to the Internet. In addition, all those who provide information willl also be sent a copy of the final listing via e-mail.

If you're interested in participating, please send the following information to the following e-mail address (don't reply to this one):

dcgs_surname@yahoo.com (ADDRESS NO LONGER IN SERVICE)

Surname

All surnames will be posted with DelMarVa as the location. There is no need to send the county and state of the surname or any dates.

Thus was born the DelMarVa Surnames Project. The response to his call was enthusiastic, and Mark gathered a large number of surname submissions from a great many DelMarVa researchers. He formatted the original list, sent it out to all participants, and made it available for posting online through the Handley's Eastern Shore MD Genealogy Project Since that time, the Project has been managed by Shari Handley, who maintains the web pages and adds new surname submissions as they come in.

The DSP has become a valuable tool for networking between people researching in area of the DelMarVa Peninsula, and we hope that you, too, will find some new cousins within these pages.
